Somis, CA - February 23rd 2008 - Members of Amgen Cycling Club, Giant Bicycle and Sundance Cycles made their annual pilgrimage out to Somis for the Amgen Tour of California Balcom Canyon BBQ. Racers from the ToC were in transit from Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita with a slight detour up Balcom Canyon.
Clothing and Sponsors
The first clothing order has already been compiled based off of historical information. Based on member feedback, we have decided to change clothing vendors. For 2008 we are going with Hincapie Sportwear. Hincapie is committed to our membership and will offer a higher quality clothing at competitive prices. Hincapie will also offer a larger number of other clothing options which we have never received in the past (ie, knee warmers, base layers, sweaters, etc). Finally, Hincapie will inventory extras for us throughout the year, so no more delays in clothing ordering or shipment - to your house! The first clothing order will be delivered and in your hands around the Amgen Tour of California (Sponsor Night IV).
There are also a number of initiatives scheduled for the 2008 season. More information will follow at the beginning of the year. If you have any questions, please contact us. Welcome back.
New Application Process
Due to the new website being set up, Amgen Cycling will first be renewing memberships within the club and will NOT allow new members to join immediately. Our first task is handling all existing members and ensuring that no issues exist with their membership.
Once the application goes live on the website, simply complete the membership application process and wait. If you are an Amgen employee, your application will automatically be accepted.
Its that time of year again - membership renewal.
The process for 2008 is pretty straightforward and requires minimal effort on the member part to renew. If you are an existing member, please note that your membership status has been set to 'renew'. You will not have any access to the members' section until such time that you change your status (ie, pay your dues).
Renew Process
When you do renew, please be aware that your complimentary jersey is contained within this process, not the clothing process. This worked well in 2007, so we have stuck with the same flow. Please make every effort to renew as quickly as possible. This is a once a year deal and it's much easier for us to handle this over a couple of days. You will all be required to login in to the members section of the website in order to renew your membership and obtain your free jersey.
My wife was diagnosed with advanced stage IIIa ovarian cancer in February of this year. As is the case for many ovarian cancer patients, she had no overt symptoms, no family history of the disease and was otherwise in perfectly good health. After the devastating diagnosis came the frightening statistics surrounding treatment. Just last year, the National Cancer Institute recommended an aggressive platinum-based intraperitoneal chemotherapy regimen as one of the few ways to improve the survivability rates for ovarian cancer patients. Intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy has been around for quite some time, but had fallen out of favor because of the severity of side effects and the significant reduction in quality of life experienced by patients. The treatment is so harsh that only 40% of the patients in the NCI study were able to complete the six-cycle IP regimen. Nonetheless, with the advent of improved anti-nausea drugs and other medications to help combat the side effects, the NCI felt that the resultant gains in life expectancy were significant enough to recommend the treatment. By mid-March, we had started our first IP chemo cycle.

This month I will try to expand on that with some of my personal thoughts and observations about safely contributing to a successful pace line.
